There are many worthwhile charitable causes around the world. Many of which people are drawn to due to personal experience or past circumstance. This is the case for nine year old CJ Burford.
After witnessing his grandmother deal with cancer he decided to take action. The North Carolina native began cycling for charity at just six years old. While he’s previously mostly ridden within his home state this time around he’s embarked on a journey that is a bit longer.
CJ aims to bike the Southern Tier Adventure Cycling route, a cross-country trip from California to Florida that is just over 3,000 miles. He embarked with his family on September 1 and the journey is being documented on their blog.
Generally CJ is awake at 6:00 a.m. and cycling by the next hour. In a typical day he might ride 50-55 miles before stopping in the afternoon to be homeschooled and rest for the night. Quite the timetable for a nine year old but he is dedicated to helping others.
He aims to raise $100,000 for the National Children’s Cancer Society, which aids families with the non-medical expenses associated with having a child in cancer treatment. The trip will culminate around Thanksgiving in Florida.
