The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has recently passed a resolution to commemorate November 2nd as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
Crimes against journalists and media workers have been on the rise in recent years and it is necessary to safeguard the interests of those who uphold the right of freedom of expression, often in very hostile environments. Journalists are constantly facing threats in their work.
Murders and imprisonment have become common in many areas of the world. These attacks can come form private parties, gangsters and even government officials. Many of these crimes are committed with utmost impunity, which means that the perpetrators are well protected through power and connections.
The last decade has seen the murder of more than 700 journalists who have brought news and information to public. 2013 saw the murder of 91 journalists and media workers. Almost 9 out 10 cases fall under crimes committed in impunity. Through this resolution, it is decreed that Member States should do all within their power to prevent violence against journalists. They should also increase accountability and bring to justice the perpetrators of these crimes. It also seeks to ensure that victims are given appropriate remedies. A safe and conducive environment should be provided for journalists to perform their work without any outside interference.
Freedom of Expression organisations will be hosting many events on November 2. Information relating to this can easily be found on the websites of entities like IFEX, UN and UNESCO. It is important to raise awareness about this day as thousands of journalists all over the world live under constant threat, while bringing important information out for public scrutiny. It is an important mission that helps in the betterment of society. Let us join hands and hope for a better tomorrow where crimes against journalists and media persons will finally come to an end.
