World toilet day – Protect the privacy of girls and women

Around 2.5 billion people around the globe do not have proper access to sanitation facilities. This is resulting in serious health issues, along with serious impacts on social and environmental development. Rapes and assaults on females are effects of such impacts as females do not have proper access to toilets, resulting in loss of privacy. To voice concern against this issue, World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th of November. Equality and Dignity is the main theme chosen for this important day. The world toilet day is an important aspect of the UN events recognised in the year 2001, and is being given importance all over the world.

In India Unlike world science day and world science day for peace and development, various NGOs work tirelessly on this day to spread the importance of toilets. They perform programs to create the public awareness and bring a sense of urgency in the government. Such activities are also reported in countries like Madagascar, Kenya, Mali, South Africa, United Kingdom and Indonesia.

In Pakistan, a campaign was organized by community development foundation with the help of oxford public school, teachers, and students from various communities Competitions among the students on the topic of world toilet day were held. This was done to create the awareness among the local communities regarding the importance of proper toilets. Latrine models were also designed to create the sense of proper disposal of human excreta. Posters and banners were also printed and delivered in the rural areas.

In Nairobi, an event was held in the city stadium for the first time. The event was organized by Plan International in collaboration with Goal Kenya, KWAHO and city council of Nairobi. It was a splendid event, which claimed worldwide appreciation. Prior to the event, 17 city schools with 623 toilets were cleaned in order to spread the message of clean toilets. The cleaning was done in 2 days by a team of 66 members. The campaign also involved door to door, street and theatre banners. Radio talk shows were also organized to aware the common people about the benefits of proper toilet facilities.

According to General Ban Ki-moon, secretary of United Nations, open defecation has to be stopped in order to ensure property safety of women and prevent assaults and rape. This was the message from him on world toilet day. The world toilet day has been an important and serious matter in all of the united nations event.
