Giving back to the charities that impact us the most can seem daunting initially. Firstly because there are so many charities around the globe with worthy causes. Also, because perhaps you feel that you can’t make a large enough contribution. Every contribution though can impact a charity and a worthy cause. This week we are highlighting two distinct yet equally inspiring stories about people around the globe making giving to charity their priority.

The first is self-made billionaire Yu Pengnian who decided to donate the entirety of his £1.2 billion pound fortune to a charity foundation. The foundation, created five years ago, aids a variety of Pengnian’s favourite causes from medical operations and infrastructure reconstruction to student scholarships. This man, one of the richest in China, left his family out of the fortune he amassed over his 88 years of life but they are supportive of his decision to give the money to charity.

Of course any charity would be very fortunate to receive a billion dollar donation but even smaller contributions are helpful.

Canadian teenager Courtney Barich decided to use a popular school dance as an opportunity to raise money for a charity that is important to her. She decided to forgo the typical fancy dress and make a personal challenge to wear a burlap sack to her school grad (similar to a prom) to raise $10,000 for Saint Martin de Porres Orphanage in Manila.

Barich created a Facebook page and website to raise money for the orphanage which she had planned to visit prior to deciding on raising the money. She was successfully able to reach her goal and include her entire school community in the process.

These two stories are examples of how anyone, no matter your age or background, can make a difference. You don’t have to be a billionaire like Yu Pengnian or wear a burlap sack like Courtney Barich to give back and help those in need.
