International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is a day that is usually commemorated on 27th January, of every year. On this day, the United Nation commemorates the Holocaust that adversely affected many Jews during 2nd World war.
On this day, people also remember how the Soviet troops released the Nazi death camp Auschwitz – Birkenau, that was in Poland, on 27th January, 1945. What do people do?

Various leaders and the holocaust survivors make their voices heard on this day of Holocaust. Many of the people who speak on this day, talk of the Holocaust or their experiences of the event, and give reasons as to why the whole world should never overlook the events that took place in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. Many who speak stress on the need for keeping the information for future generations to know what happened – to prevent such from happening again – genocide.

Historical Background

The Holocaust is a word used to describe the intentional violation and murder of millions before and after the 2nd world War in Germany and all the regions occupied by the Germans. Jews were adversely affected. Also, the homosexuals, Roma people, Soviet civilians, people with disabilities, prisoners of war were not spared. Many people died in camps that were spread all over the Nazi – occupied Europe. One of the worst camps was Auschwitz –Birkenau in Poland. More than a million people died there before being liberated by the Soviet troops on 27th January, 1945.On 24th January, 2005, the UN Assembly commemorated the 60th anniversary. From this, the UN set 27th January as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It was to educate on the Holocaust to prevent the genocide. It was meant to reject denials that it happened.Many Jews, mainly in Israel, also commemorate Yom Hashoah. This is the day of mourning of Holocaust victims. This day is the 27th day of the Hebrew month; it falls in April or May of the normal calendar.

 

Symbols

The symbols of this day are made of four elements on a black background. Two elements are two words “Remember and beyond” and the United Nations symbol, both in white. The United Nations symbol consist the globe centered on the N pole surrounded with two olive branches. The other elements are two white roses and piece of barbed wire. The white roses represent peace, remembrance and freedom.International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust has been celebrated for more than 60 years now. It remains one of the special days in the United Nations calendar. Its commemoration reminds people of what happened and also prevents the events from occurring again.
