On 22 December 2005, The UN General Assembly identified that solidarity is one of the fundamental values which the world should embrace. The purpose of the virtue is make ties in relations among people in the Twenty first Century. Due to this there was set a date, 20 December of each year, as an International Human Solidarity Day. In 2003, a fund had already been established with the aim of eradicating poverty through promoting human and social development in third world countries especially in the poor parts of the larger population.

In the United Nations’ Observances page, Ban Ki-moon urges people from all nations regardless of their traditions, faith, and cultures to have unity in achieving the Millennium promise and leave a sustainable progress for future generations. At the conference it was further discussed that there is need to emphasize on the creditors and debtors to share responsibilities to prevent uncontrollable situations. The solution concluded was that debt relief towards developing nations can play a larger part in utilizing resources to eradicate poverty and sustainable economic growth. Other alternatives to consider in promoting development were to cancel or reduce the debt to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The UN conference stressed the need to have financial institutions that could aid in economic empowerment including micro-finance and micro-credit expansions, removal of regulatory institutions and instead establishment of financial aids to the poor.

Other stakeholders in this project include the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society. Their agenda was adopted by the World Summit regarding development of technology as a powerful tool for development and eradicating poverty. There is need to embrace and realize that information, communication and other forms of technology will maximize the globalization process in achieving this goal.

Avoiding conflicts as a way to solve differences but instead use foreign investments to build social infrastructure and create employment opportunities. Additionally, provide safe drinking water and half the objective goal to 2015. This will improve access to sanitation as affirmed by the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation. Among other concerns in poverty eradication includes better housing and reduce the number of slum-dwellers by the year 2020.

The United Nations has shown great concern in poverty eradication by welcoming all stakeholders to participate in the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which was established by General Assembly. The Secretary General was mandated to observe and review the Day so that they can monitor the progress and lessons learned.
